How to Sell Out a Tour as an Indie Band

Last updated:

The Sold Out Show System in Four Steps

Step 1: Build the buyer list. Before tour dates are even announced, run a low-friction monetization offer (a Free + Shipping CD, a $9 lyric book, an $18 vinyl pre-order). Every buyer becomes a known customer with a verified payment history and a city attached. That city data becomes your routing engine.

Step 2: Route the tour into the densest markets.Sort your buyer list by city. Route shows into the top 8 to 15 markets where you have the densest buyer concentration. Resist the urge to add cities for ego or convenience. A 200-buyer city outperforms a 5,000-listener city every time.

Step 3: Warm each market 6 weeks out. Run Meta fan-finder and content-engagement ads to lookalike audiences of your buyer list in each tour market. The point is not to sell tickets yet. It is to expand the audience that recognizes the band before the announcement hits.

Step 4: Convert with direct ticket-sales ads.Two weeks before each show, switch to conversion campaigns with custom landing pages and direct purchase intent. Email your buyer list first, then run paid retargeting against your warmed lookalikes, then run cold music creative to fresh audiences in the city.

When we routed the UK tour, we ignored the cities that looked good on paper and went where the buyer data was densest. We sold out 5 of 5 shows on a 6-week warm-up. That never would have happened if we'd routed off Spotify listener data alone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do indie bands actually sell out tours?

By building a buyer list before the tour is announced, routing the tour into the markets where that buyer list is densest, warming those markets with paid retargeting in the 6 weeks before announcement, and converting with direct ticket-sales campaigns to the existing buyer pool first. Cold music creative comes second.

How early should I start tour marketing?

At minimum 6 weeks out from announcement. Markets where the buyer list and ad warming have had less than 4 weeks consistently underperform compared to markets with 6+ weeks of lead time. The earlier you start, the cheaper the ticket cost-per-sale gets.

What ad budget do I need for tour marketing?

Plan on $50 to $150 per show in retargeting spend, plus $300 to $1,000 per show in conversion-campaign spend in the final 2 to 3 weeks. Smaller markets can convert on the lower end. Major markets need the higher end to break through.

How do I figure out which cities to route the tour through?

Use buyer data. The cities where you have actual paying customers (merch buyers, course buyers, email subscribers who clicked links) outrank cities where you only have Spotify listeners or social followers. A 200-buyer city beats a 5,000-listener city every time.

What if I have no buyer list yet?

Build it before you tour. The fastest way is a Free + Shipping funnel or low-priced product launch in the 90 days before tour announcement. That gives you both the buyer list and the city data you need to route. Touring without a buyer list is how indie bands play to half-full rooms.
